Notes

In 1958 Picasso moved to the fourteenth-century Chateau de Vauvenargues near Aix en Provence. Frustrated by the delays in sending proofs for printing in Paris, he began to work with the young Vallauris printer Hidalgo Arnera who introduced him to the linocut poster. Here, years after the first Cubist achievements, form and colour have been simplified into a front and profile construction of the head and shoulders of a bullfighter.

Purchased from Messrs Berggruen and Co, 1962.
