Notes | Wood and polychrome Highlander snuff figure made for a counter display in a tobacconist's shop in the early nineteenth century. The Highlander figure, based on a likeness of the Old Pretender, appears to have originated in the 1720s. Scottish snuff was famous in the eighteenth century and in an age when few people were able to read and write, the life size version of the Highlander figure were used outside tobacconist's as shop signs. | | Purchased from Edward H Pinto, 1965. |
