Notes | This is a chasing tool known as a side notch. Wood turners used it on a lathe for cutting wooden screws. This tool cut the spiral along the outside of a screw .This is known as the male thread. It required a steady hand to produce an even depth and smooth finish. A similar tool, the top notch, was needed to cut the spiral thread in the hole which the screw fits. This was known as the female thread. The long handle is typical of turning tools. It dates from the nineteenth century and was used in England on a treadle lathe. | Purchased from Edward H Pinto, 1965. |
