Firmer chisels were sturdy, general purpose tools used by a number of different branches of woodworking trades including carpenters, joiners and wood carvers. Similar, lighter, long bladed tools, known as paring chisels were used for more delicate work. This chisel was made by William Ward and Son of Sheffield between 1860-1914.
