Basic Information

Accession Number:1965T2081
Collection:Social History - Pinto Collection
Date:1677-05 - 1677-05

This boxwood lever action nutcracker is English, dated 1677. It is unusual as the handles are not turned but rather carved to simulate woodturning. The cross-over lever action is a characteristically English method of production, and the presence of the chip-carving decoration and inscription indicates that it was made as a love token. The inscription reads: 'If all be trew as weemens say ye night is sweeter then the day'.

Purchased from Edward H Pinto, 1965.
