Notes | An oak deportment board, used in a Victorian school to correct pupils' posture.Children at school in the 18th and 19th centuries often had to put up with punishments which would not be permitted today. This deportment board was used to stop children slouching. Children had to stand with their hands behind their back. The board was then looped through the elbows, which forced the shoulders back into what was undoubtedly a very uncomfortable position. | Purchased from Edward H Pinto, 1965. |
