Notes

This pair of mahogany finger stocks was used as a punishment in a Victorian school. This object, like the deportment board is another example of the severe punishments found in Victorian schools. Children had to learn long passages of text which they then had to recite from memory. If they made mistakes one of the punishments was to have their fingers inserted into the holes in these stocks and then have their hands tied behind their backs. The child would then have to repeat the passage until they had learned it correctly.

Purchased from Edward H Pinto, 1965.
