Notes | This tankard was carved in Ireland from bog oak. Bog oak is very hard to carve and the fine detail on this tankard has a sculptural quality not often found on wooden drinking vessels. The silver lining carries the Dublin hallmark for 1831. The tankard weighs almost 5 kilograms when it is empty and it was probably intended as a ceremonial piece rather than a functional object. | Purchased from Edward H Pinto, 1965. |
