Notes | Until around 1740, all microscopes consisted of a thin wooden or cardboard cylinder, generally covered with shagreen (shark skin) or leather. This one, made of boxwood, was made in Nuremberg around 1780. Microscopes of this type were intended more for recreational purposes than scientific study. | Purchased from Edward H Pinto, 1965. |
