The handwritten notes on the inside of this book of slates indicate that they were used to record business accounts. Slates were used for a variety of purposes including the most common usage, school work. They are almost impossible to date accurately, as patterns and styles of making them changed little over the centuries. This example was used in England and probably dates from the 18th century.
