Notes | This washing bat was used to wash clothes in northern England over 250 years ago.In rural areas in the 18th century, clothes were washed in streams and rivers. After the clothes had been submerged in water the bats were used to beat the dirt out of them. This one is made out of elm and has been worn smooth with use. | Purchased from Edward H Pinto, 1965. |
