Notes | Large numbers of checks of this type were made in the die-sinking workshops of Birmingham throughout the nineteenth century. They generally bear the name of the issuing establishment, the name of the proprietor, and the denomination. The means by which these tokens were distributed is uncertain. They may have been given as game prizes, as bonuses to regular customers or as change. It has been suggested that this token, one penny, would have bought half a pint of draught ale.
