This halfpenny token was engraved and struck by John Gregory Hancock for Messrs. Roe & Co. The likeness of Charles Roe was taken from his monument at Christ Church, Macclesfield, which he built in 1775. Hancock was a skilfull engraver working in Birmingham during the latter part of the eighteenth and early part of the nineteenth centuries. He was first employed by Matthew Boulton at the Soho Mint and later worked for P Kempson.
