Notes | This sculpture is believed to have been comissioned by Anna Maria Luisa de Medici (1667-1743). The story of Judith from the Old Testament Apocrypha was popular in the Baroque period. The image of a victorious woman defeating her male oppressor may have appealed to the artist's patron. A preliminary drawing for the sculpture is also in the Museum's collection. | | Purchase, 1967. |
