Notes | This medal commemorates both Decimalisation and the Birmingham Numismatic Society, and reminds us that Birmingham is known as the "birthplace of modern coinage".Decimal coinage was adopted in Britain on February 15th 1971 and finally brought British currency into line with most other countries. Proposals to introduce this system were first made over 300 years ago and the subject was first raised in Parliament over 150 years ago.The Birmingham Numismatic Society was formed in the 1960s and met fortnightly with the intention of promoting, as informally as possible, the study of coins, medals and tokens locally, nationally and world-wide. It also produced a quarterly magazine called 'Cartwheel'. | | Presented by Birmingham Numismatic Society |
