One of five study drawings in Birmingham's collection for the 1884 oil painting 'King Cophetua and the Beggar Maid' now in the collections of Tate. Birmingham's collection also holds the fully worked up colour cartoon for this subject.

A study for the figure of the King, with a further study of his hands holding the crown above and to the right. Like many of the accessories which appeared in his work, the crown was drawn from an actual model.
