Notes | This necklace by William Thomas Blackband (1885-1949) depicts the owl as a symbol of Wisdom. It uses a solderless granulation technique, as practised by the Etruscans, to attach the decorative wires to the links of the necklace. The Etruscan people had their peak of power and wealth in the 6th century BC, before the Romans. Their core territory was known as Etruria, which is now modern Tuscany and some of Umbria. Their language and culture was very different from that of the rest of the Italian peoples. | | Presented by Mrs Anne Hull Grundy, 1981. |
