Mrs Anne Hull Grundy donated a large collection of jewellery to Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery. This was one of a number of donations she made to museums in this country. She was concerned that each collection she gave to a museum should suit its manufacturing history and existing collection. This necklace forms part of a parure or set of matching jewellery. The stone is moss agate, a clear stone with green moss-like strands running through it. The strands are called dendrites (from the Greek 'dendron' for a tree), and are not actually moss but a chlorite or manganese oxide.
