Notes | The third century was a time of crisis for the Roman Empire. Between 235 and 282 there were 17 generally recognised emperors, not counting various usurpers or sons reigning with their fathers. Only two of these did not die violently. Tacitus, one of these lucky ones, was already 75 when the Senate chose him as the new emperor.
