Sunita was the nickname Epstein gave to a Kashmiri woman, Amina Peerbhoy, who lived with the Epsteins between 1925 and 1931 and frequently modelled for him. This is one of many drawings Epstein made of Sunita and her son Enver.Epstein's use of so-called 'exotic' models, with a strongly sexual presence, was controversial. For Epstein, they were a means of challenging European ideals of beauty and asserting the fundamental humanism of his concerns. But his identification of Indian and African models with the elemental in human nature - maternal instinct, sexuality, the urge to procreate etc. - has itself more than a tinge of the racist stereotype. |
