Notes | The Southall Collection is a major collection of Palestinian Dress dating from 1900-1930. It includes garments and accessories worn by nomadic Bedouin people as well as men, women and children living in Ramallah and Bethlehem.
A dress or thob typical of the Ramallah region dated to about the nineteenth century. Made of undyed hand woven cotton, with embroidery in cross-stitch, mainly in red silks, with pale green and mauve. The chest panel or qabbeh is classic of Ramallah panels, and contains design elements common to many chest panels in southern Palestine. In particular the V shaped pattern below the neck opening called the 'arch' or koss in Ramallah, while other parts of Palestine would usually call it 'necklace' or gelayed.
