Notes

The common lime is a hardwood species found throughout central and southern Europe. It produces a soft, fine grained, white wood which carves easily. The great wood carver, Grinling Gibbons(1648-1721) worked extensively with this wood. Lime is also used for wood turning and until recently for making artificial limbs. Wood fibres, or bast, from lime trees can be woven to make nets and ropes.
