Notes | This stained glass window depicts the story of Gethsemane from the book of Matthew in the New Testament of the Bible. It shows Christ's agony in the garden with the sleeping apostles below and the cock, who's crowing reminded St. Peter of Christ's prophecy that Peter would deny him.The subjects are physical and mental pain, and betrayal, which can be linked to the feelings of survivors of the Second World War. These are expressed graphically in the angularity of the bodies, the juxtopositioning of colour, and in motifs such as the thorny cactus. | | Presented by the artist, 1987. |
