Notes

Liotard made two visits to England - the first in 1753, when he painted the children of the Prince of Wales, and the second in 1772-4 when he made this pastel work. Liotard was one of the greatest masters of this demanding medium. Matthew Robinson Boulton (1772-1842) was the son of the great Birmingham industrialist and engineer Matthew Boulton (1728-1809).

Purchased by private treaty via Christie's London with the support of the Museums and Galleries Commission/ V and A grant aid and assistance from the National Arts Collection Fund (Mrs Beatrice N. Stuart Bequest) and the friends of Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery, 1987.
