Notes | Small metallic checks were issued by a wide variety of British tradesmen and institutions during the nineteenth century. Shapes vary from circular to square, hexagon, octagon, and even hearts. Each check generally includes the trader's name and address, as well as the denomination. Many were issued by traders at the Smithfield market in Birmingham. The manufacture of these tokens was a thriving Birmingham industry. This example was made by R Whitaker of Great Charles Street. | | Purchased from Tudor House Antiques, 1991. |
