From 1930 Frank Taylor Lockwood began recording in his diaries, the changes occurring to the Southeast of Birmingham. His observations illustrate the speed and extent in which these areas were transformed from rural farming communities to the sometimes vast suburban housing estates that we know today. He also comments on his sense of urgency to paint or draw the old farms and houses before they faced the bulldozer and vanished forever. These buildings, for example, were demolished around 1949.
