Notes | John Smith (1936-1994) had a career in the steel industry, this experience informed his later development as a ceramic and glass artist. In 1991 he participated in an exhibition in Cologne. His knowledge of historical engineering gave him an appreciation of canals and waterways, and he understood how important the Rhine was to the development of Germany. The optical properties of water and the visual relationship of these to the optical properties of glass offered both scene and visual reference. | Presented by the Friends of Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery, with funding from the MGC / VandA Purchase Grant Fund. |
