Notes

Howard Hodgkin is one of a handful of British artists to achieve international recognition since the 1960s. Gardening masks the beginning of the artist's interest in combining figurative and abstract elements. The intense colour is a response to the Pop Art of the period but also reflects Hodgkin's admiration for Indian Art. The loosely painted female figure is a portrait of the artist's wife, Julia.

Purchased with assistance from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the National Art Collection Fund, the MGC/VandA Purchase Grant Fund and the Rowlands Trust, 1997.
