Notes | Although the use of ormolu originated in France, Boulton did not take influence from the French in the design of his pieces. The highly ornamented work of his contemporaries in France of the 1760s, was too extravagant for his English taste. He wanted to emulate, if not surpass, the quality of the French work but to simplify the ornamentation. This ormolu and marble table was made at the Soho Manufactory c 1798. It is believed to be the only one of its kind made at Soho. It has an ormolu mounted gilt wood frieze, and ormolu legs. | | Acquired with assistance from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the National Art Collections Fund, the Wolfson Foundation, and the Lunar Society. |
