Notes | Martin Smith's work has become increasingly abstract and geometric. He works in themed series concerned with ideas about interior space, perspective and the effects of light. Using relatively soft red earthenware he adapted the technology of cold working glass. The work is machined after firing to produce precise forms and even surfaces. Since 1990 he has used metallic leaf to create reflective interiors. The architectural dimension of his work is evident in this vessel, reminiscent of columns or mouldings.Smith prefers to draw his designs rather than use a computer. These are translated into plaster scale models. Each line and curve is carefully calculated before work with the actual clay begins. | | On loan from The Keatley Trust. |
