As a student Steve Follen took two years out on a research trip to Australia where he studied contemporary Aboriginal art, and visited craft co-operatives and galleries. He now produces a wide range of work from the experimental and speculative, to functional client based commissions and more site specific public art projects. "I am interested in the many ways in which we interpret objects, how an everyday object can also be seen to have a power and identity beyond itself, for example, a wedding ring. I like the idea that you can alter the identity of an object simply by changing its finish, where it is sited or the context in which it is seen. I am intrigued by the relationship between object, artefact, function and abstraction." (Steve Follen 1999) |
