Notes

This acquisition is a large and important, drawings by Fuseli. The scene depicted is Act 3, scene 4 in Shakespeare's King Lear. Fuseli avoided detailed scenery, preferring to concentrate on the emotional drama through gestures and movements of the human figure. As Professor of Painting at the Royal Academy, Fuseli influenced a generation of Romantic artists. This drawing was made in Rome when Fuseli's draughtmanship was particularly creative and experimental.
