Notes | This bowl is an example of wucai decoration. Wucai literally means 'five colours'. White Chinese porcelain is painted with overglaze enamel colours. This technique was developed in China during the Ming dynasty. The bowl is decorated with white chrysanthemums and red peonies. Chrysanthemums represent hermits, who are aloof from worldly success. Peonies symbolise elegance and grace. | | Franklin Bequest, 2006. |
