Notes | An Empress Dowager bowl decorated 'en grisaille' (in monchrome tones).
This bowl is decorated with the pattern for the Dowager Empress Cixi. When her son Emperor Tongzhi died at the age of 18, she appointed her three year old nephew Guangxu as heir. From 1862 to 1908, she was the power behind the throne during the reigns of these two young emperors. The grapes on a vine suggest abundance while the magpie is a symbol of good luck.
