Biography for John Henderson

Born:1764
Died:1843

Employment

A member of the 'Munro School', the term refers to a large number of drawings and watercolours which were made at the home of the patron Dr Thomas Monro (1759-1833), at Bushey in Hertfordshire, and also at his London house and at another he owned in Surrey. Munro encouraged young artists to study his own collection of paintings and drawings, and many of the most important practitioners of the day made use of his 'Academy'. Henderson was a neighbour of Monro in Adelphi Terrace, London, and similarly he too allowed artists, including Turner and Girtin, to copy the works of earlier masters in his home. These so called Monro School drawings are easily recognisable and several are now thought to be collaborative efforts by Thomas Girtin ( 1775-1802) (who drew the pencil outlines) and Turner (1775-1851) who laid down the washes.
