Biography for Robert Bevan
EducationBevan studied with Alfred Pearce at Westminster School of Art under Fred Brown in 1888, and at the Academie Julian, Paris. MemberFitzroy Street Group as a result of exhibiting at the AAA in 1908. Founder member of the Camden Town Group in 1911, the London Group in 1913, the Cumberland Market Group in 1915 and after exhibiting at the NEAC he became a member in 1922. TravelsIn 1891 he went to Spain and studied Velazquez and Goya. He then went onto Tangiers with Hoseph Crawhall and George Denholm-Armour. In 1890-1 and 1893-4 he was at Pont-Avon, where on his second visit he met Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) and Renoir (1841-1919). Following his marriage, he frequently spent time in Poland. EmploymentBevan is best known as a member of the Camden Town Group which was formed in 1911 by Harold Gilman (1878-1919), S F Gore (1878-1914), Ginner (1978-52) and Bevan, under the inspiration of Walter Sickert (1860-1942). He is known for his paintings of horse subjects, doing a number of scenes of cabyards and horsesales during his Camden Town years.
