Biography for Anthony Caro

Childhood

Born in London 8 March 1924. Caro studied at Charterhouse School, London 1937-41, at Christ's College Cambridge 1942-44 (Engineering degree 1944), studied sculpture at Regent Street Polytechnic, London 1946, and also studied at the Royal Academy Schools, London 1947-52. Caro served in the Fleet Air Arm from 1944-45. He married Sheila Girling in 1949 and was a part-time sculpture assistant to Henry Moore 1951-53, and a Sculpture Instructor at St Martin's School of Art, London 1952-53 and 1964-72. He made his first visits to the USA in 1959 and was a Sculptor Instructor at Bennington College Vermont from 1963-64 and in 1965.
