Biography for Geoffrey Whiting
EducationGeoffrey Whiting trained as an architect at the Birmingham School of Architecture (1930s). EmploymentWhiting first discovered pottery whilst on army service in India (1939-48) where he helped local village potters. After the war he taught himself pottery with the aid of Herbert Read. He set up a workshop attached to the Adult Education College, at Avoncroft, Worcestershire. In 1954 he moved his workshop to Hampton Lovett, Worcestershire. In 1971 Whiting travelled to Lesotho, South Africa to studying local pottery. In 1972 he established a new studio in Canterbury which he ran until his death in 1988. Whilst at Canterbury he taught at Kings School, Canterbury and lecturered at Medway College of Art and Design.
