Guido Reni began his career in Rome but returned to his native Bologna in 1614. Another artist closely associated with the Carracci family, he was a pupil of Lodovico Carraci (1555-1619). He was very popular in the fashionable circles of Rome and Bologna, and his melodramatic classical style continued to be admired throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
