Biography for John Bratby

Childhood

Born in Wimbledon, London, 19 July 1928. Bratby was educated at Tiffin Boys' School, Surrey and studied at Kingston School of Art, Surrey 1948-50 and the Royal College of Art, London 1951-54. He joined the army in the 1940s but was invalided out due to short-sightedness. He married Jean E Cooke in 1953 (divorced 1976) and they had four children; three sons and one daughter. Bratby taught at Carlisle College of Art in 1956 and at the Royal College of Art, London from 1957 to 1958. He died in Hastings in 1992.
