Biography for John Joseph Hughes
EmploymentBirmingham Landscape painter who painted extensively in Wales and the Lake District. His London exhibits spanned his earlier years - 1838-67 - 4 at the Royal Academy (including Crowning the May Queen (1857 and Rosthwaite Mil, Borrowdale (1865); 16 works at the BI; 22 at SS and 33 at other London galleries. Between 1862-1908 he exhibited regularly at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists - a total of some 360 works. While mainly landscape, these ranged in subjects from rural occupations, parks, costal scenes to churches, village & town scenes and still life. Between 1860-99 he figured in the Local directory. |
