Biography for Joseph Edward Southall

He initially trained as an architect, but turned to painting in 1882, and was inspired to take up tempera after a long trip to Italy in the following year. He was one of the first artists to revive this medium and after contact with Ruskin, Morris and Burne-Jones, he settled into a successful career as a tempera painter and watercolourist. He also founded The Society of Painters in Tempera in November 1901 along with John Dickson Batten, William Holman Hunt and Walter Crane.
