Mary Cassatt settled in Paris in 1874 after travelling and studying widely in Europe. Her style developed through her contact with Manet (1832-83) and her lifelong friend Degas (1834-1917), and she shared with the Impressionists a fascination with the delicate and fugitive effects of light.
