Biography for Maxwell Ashby Armfield
EducationBirmingham School of Art (1899). EmploymentMaxwell Armfield chose to study at the Birmingham School of Art because of its growing reputation. He was influenced by the artists he worked with, Henry Payne (1868-1940), Arthur Gaskin (1862-1928) and Joseph Southall (1861-1944). After taking Gaskin's advice to visit Italy in 1902, he went on to Paris, sharing a studio with Norman Wilkinson (1884-1934) and another tempera painter, Keith Henderson (1883-1982). His 'Manual of Tempera Painting', published in 1930, was dedicated to Southall.
