Biography for Octavius Oakley

Despite beginning life working for a cloth manufacturer near Leeds in Yorkshire, Oakley resolved to become a specialist in painting portraits in watercolour. Living for a time in Derby he moved in 1836 to Leamington Spa in Warwickshire. Oakley moved back to London in the early 1840s and remained there until his death, concentrating on works depicting gypsies and their unique way of life.
