Biography for Walter Richard Sickert
ChildhoodIn 1926 he married for the 3rd time. EducationHe studied at King's College in London before spending 1 year at the Slade School in 1881. MemberHe was a member of a number of groups during his lifetime. These include the Fitzroy Street Group (1907), the AAA (1908), Camden Town Group (1911), London Group (1913) and was elected to both the NEAC and the Society of British Arts in the 1880s. TravelsHe visited Paris where he met Degas. Between 1885 and 1922 he lived for part of each year in Dieppe and lived there permanently during the periods 1889 - 1905 and 1919 - 1922. He occassionally worked in Venice during the period 1900 to 1904, following a trip to the city in 1895. In the UK, he worked in Brighton and Bath as well as London. He finally left London in 1934 to live in Thanet, then Bathampton, where he died. EmploymentHe spent 3 years on stage between the years 1877 - 1881. Later he taught at various private schools (1893 - 1926) and at the Westminster School of Art (1908 - 1912; 1915 - 1918). |
