The Greeks believed it was barbaric to drink undiluted wine, hydria or water jars contained water to dilute wine at meals. The painter has been identified as the Dwarf Painter, so called from a vase in Boston Museum of Fine Arts, USA, depicting a boy accompanied by a dwarf servant.

Purchased from Rollin & Feuardent, Paris, through Sir Charles James Robinson.
