Basic Information

Accession Number:1920A137
Collection:Antiquities – Classical Greek & Roman
Date:425 BC – 400 BC

Notes

This Greek gold brooch was found in the Crimea, 425-400 BC.The mythical animals are a griffin (half lion, half eagle) and a hippocamp (a sea horse). At the end of the catch plate is a pomegranate. All of these figures are hollow and made from very thin sheet gold. This means that they are fragile and the brooch would not have survived everyday use. It may have been made especially to be buried with a person.

Presented by Birmingham Jewellers’ & Silversmiths’ Association, 1920.
