Mourning, or memento mori, rings were often bequeathed in wills to close friends and family to be worn at the funeral and as a reminder to the wearer of the departed. This 18th century gold mourning ring is set with an enamel skull design which opens on a hinge mechanism. It is thought that the central recess inside was originally filled with enamel.
