Notes | During excavations at Jericho, ten unusual human skulls were discovered from the earliest levels of the site. These were unusual in that their facial features had been modelled in clay or plaster, and shells had been inset to form their eyes. Their significance is still discussed by archaeologists, but the traditional view is that they represent venerated ancestors who were perhaps worshipped as part of an ancestor cult. | | Presented by the British School of Archaeology in Jerusalem, 1955. |
